Being a full-time rap artist is an absolute dream, but let’s face it: it’s a milestone that requires a long journey, and most of us need a side hustle! Having a job is a great way for rappers to support themselves while pursuing their music. Keep reading to learn why rappers might benefit from a job outside music. Funding the dream: One of the most notable reasons rappers should get a job or side hustle is to get funds to make music or improve their craft. Rappers like me face many expenses: From music production to recording, mixing, and mastering, all of these can be costly! Touring is expensive as well. The cost of traveling is at an all-time high, while food and lodging aren’t always provided to rappers on the road. By having a reliable income stream from a job, rap artists can ensure that they have the financial means to consistently create high-quality music and touring to spread the word. Promotion: Many struggling rappers do not have the budget to promote themselves. Hip-hop artists with financial stability have a strong advantage over the rest. They’re able to allocate a budget to their promo and marketing needs. Whether it’s social media ads, networking with other artists, or attending industry events, artists need to keep pushing their pomo, and it’s easier to do that with some extra dough from your job! Weathering the storm: In the early stages of a rap career, artists might go through periods of slow progress or limited opportunities. So many competitors are out there, so it is not easy to become established and leave your mark. A job can act as a safety net, providing a stable income to cover basic living expenses and support their music endeavors until things pick up. Investing in yourself: Many rappers want to be “discovered.” They dream of that one label executive giving them an advance check or signing them to a juicy record deal. In other words, they want others to invest in them. The truth is the music industry is not what it used to be. Most rappers will never make it if they don’t invest in themselves first. By taking on a job to support their music career, rappers show their determination and willingness to make sacrifices to achieve their goals. This is a great way to generate money to invest in yourself. In addition, your hard work and determination can help garner respect from potential labels, investors, collaborators, and fans. Working will keep you humble Hard work can be a way to keep you grounded and humble, two very important values for an aspiring rapper. Many hip-hop songs are about the perks of success, but one doesn’t just happen to be at the top of the mountain: you must climb first!
